Friends of the Farmstead

We are the non-profit side of a 12-acre children's farmstead with nearly 200 animals and plenty of living history fun for the whole family in the middle of suburban Kansas.

A little boy came up to a staff member this weekend and asked, “Does the pond still have allergies?!” We’re happy to report that the pond is both allergy and alge free, so come fishing! (Taken with Instagram)

Welcome to PIG WEEK!
Cow Week wrapped up on Saturday and yesterday we moved on to Pig Week. You’ll be able to learn some pig facts and pick up some really awesomely bad pig jokes.
Also, be sure to stop by sometime during Pig Week and check out our incredibly cute pigs here at the Farmstead. We’re still open late (until 8pm) on Tuesdays and Thursdays until Labor Day weekend.

Bruce & his ice pop! on Flickr.Welcome to COW WEEK! Chicken Week wrapped up on Saturday with the Chicken Run (which was a huge success!), so now we move along to the next animal. We are featuring our cattle this week! Cattle have such expressive faces and unique personalities that photographing them is just so much fun. We will be sharing photos and fun facts all week long, so keep an eye out for them!

Chicken Week

With nearly 200 animals here at the Farmstead, it’s impossible for us to choose a favorite. Back in May we started doing the #dailygoat on our Twitter account, @DRCFarm, not because the goats were our favorites but more because there are so many different ones with such distinct personalities. Recently, however, we decided it wasn’t totally fair that the goats were getting all of the fame and fortune; all of our animals deserve that love and attention. So, starting this week we have decided to feature a different group of our animals or an area of the park each week.

Since Chicken Run is this Saturday, July 28 (you can still register online until July 26 here, or in person with cash or check through Saturday morning), we thought we might as well kick it off with the chickens!

We have plenty of chickens here at the Farmstead. There are chickens directly inside both entrances, chickens in Vic’s General Store (you can friend Vic’s Chicks on Facebook!), and as I mentioned- we have a Chicken Run every July. We love our chickens and after this week, we hope you will too!

Hummingbird Hero
This morning, right as we were opening the gate, one of our wonderful staff members was able to save a hummingbird’s life. He got all tangled up and couldn’t fly. The little guy had lost most of his strength so our quick thinking staffer gave him a flower to get enough energy to fly back home. It took no time at all for him to get his fill of the flower and take off…and this was all before 9:30AM.
It should also be noted that she once did the Heimlich on a very small turtle to save its life. [talk about a natural ability with incredibly small animals]
We just wanted to share a story with a happy ending on this Sunday morning!
Do you know any animal heroes? People that go above and beyond for our animal friends? Tell us about them!

2012 Goat All Star Team

Since we are located in the suburbs of Kansas City AND Kansas City is hosting the MLB All Star Game this year, we have decided to build some community spirit and join in on the fun. Thus…

You are formally invited to begin voting for DRCF’s 2012 Goat All Star Team!

Our bottle-fed baby goats are a huge draw for the Farmstead. They are cute and small and can be fed by people of all ages- in short, they are fun for the whole family. From today until July 9, when you purchase a bottle, you get to vote for our Goat All Star Team. The bottles only cost $1. ($1 = 1 bottle = 1 vote) If you love a certain goat, you can buy 5 bottles and then cast 5 votes for your favorite. The All Star Team will be announced on July 10th, so be sure to check back to see if your favorite won.

All the goats are listed after the jump, that way you can know who to watch for when you come in to vote.

Hope to see you soon!

Dairy Day 2012

Rosie

Dairy Day at the Farmstead is always a big hit with people of all ages. This year there were games, crafts, live milking demos throughout the day, farmer photos with either Bruce or Maya (two of our calves), butter churning, and visits from Midwest Dairy and Southwest Dairy! AE Dairy was here giving out milk samples, while Mimi’s Cafe was giving out muffins (was a great little breakfast for those of us working!). We had a local preschool come out and talk with guests about enrolling.  Overall, it was loads of fun. This year the event was held on June 9, 2012 from 11AM - 3PM. FOF Family Membership holders got a free cow bell when they stopped by the FOF booth! Needless-to-say, the sound of cow bells echoed through the park that afternoon. Check out all of our Dairy Day photos on Flickr!

Our next 3 events are coming up fast, so mark those calendars! First is the Fishing Tournament, you can get the “Early Worm” discount until June 25! Next is Chicken Run and you can get the “Early Chicken” rate until July 18! Finally is the Farmstead Stampede/OP5K which is $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
